Why is it important to store recreational vehicles undercover?
A caravan or boat is a joy to own, but it’s often not something you use every day. It’s easy to leave recreational vehicles parked between trips and forget that they’re exposed to damage from the sun, tree sap and droppings, pooling water and even storms. Having a suitable storage solution for your boat or caravan protects your investment, extends the vehicle’s lifespan, and reduces maintenance costs. The good news is there’s a variety of solutions available to suit your vehicle, your budget and your space.
One of the most obvious reasons that people consider for keeping any vehicle undercover is to protect from hail and storm damage. Insurance data suggests that roughly 20% of caravan write-offs are due to hail damage. While the body of a caravan is just as susceptible as that of a car, additional components such as vents, hatches, air conditioners, solar panels and skylights are particularly vulnerable to damage from hail and flying debris caused by storm winds. Pooling water from rain can also be surprisingly damaging, causing rust, mould and damage to seals, causing leaks that may not be noticed until your next outing.
Damage from the sun is another common concern, causing fading paint and peeling and flaking decals and boat upholstery can become brittle or cracked due to exposure over time. Bird droppings and tree sap are also risks to paintwork. Bird droppings are highly acidic, containing corrosive uric acid. It doesn’t take long for damage to occur, and the effects are accelerated by the sun’s heat. If left untreated, droppings can eat through the vehicle’s clear coat and seep into the base paint, leaving dull patches and permanent stains.
Carports are a popular choice solution for protection from the elements and debris. Our carports are available in skillion or gable roof styles and highly customisable to the height and dimensions of your vehicle. They can be built as a freestanding structure or alongside your home in colours that match your roof and guttering.
Keeping your vehicle covered also means that it doesn’t get as dirty! We know that getting out on the road (or water) can fall at the end of the to-do list, and having to schedule a deep clean before heading out is an additional barrier.
Beyond just protecting your caravan or boat from the elements, a garage or shed can keep your vehicles secure, offering the extra protection of an enclosed space with the convenience and security of lockable roller doors and PA doors. Our garages and sheds are highly customisable with a range of options such as Vermaseal to keep pests out, Whirlybirds and insulation to reduce heat and prevent condensation. Auto roller door openers are a popular addition.
If you can’t decide between building a garage or carport, perhaps a garaport is the solution. Garaports combine the security of an enclosed garage with the shelter of a carport. A garaport is a good option for protecting your caravan or boat plus providing additional storage or workshop space. It would be ideal for storing multiple vehicles such as a caravan and car under one structure.
